A CLOSER LOOK AT THE ARTWORK

Some dogs do not just join the family. They become part of its vocabulary.

If you have ever loved a Lab, you probably already know the words.

Happy. Friendly. Funny. Loving. Loyal. Trusting.

Great Companions.

Loves To Chew.

And, because that cheerful face belongs to a working dog, too:

Excellent Swimmer.

Curtis used 63 different words and phrases to create this Labrador Retriever and spent 13 hours drawing them into that familiar face.

There are words about intelligence, swimming, hunting and work.

But the ones that make this feel like a Lab are the ones Lab people already know by heart.

From across the room, it looks like a Labrador.

Up close, it starts sounding like yours.

INSIDE THE ARTWORK

Some of these words probably sound very familiar.

Lettering detail from Labrador Retriever.

The Labrador Retriever gave me a word list that felt a lot like the dogs people describe to me.

Friendly. Happy. Loving. Loyal. Trusting. Great Companions.

Then there is Loves To Chew, alongside Excellent Swimmer—a little mischief and a lot of ability.

I used 63 different words and phrases and spent 13 hours drawing them into the finished Lab.

I always like when a dog piece becomes personal.

Someone else sees a Labrador.

The person who has loved one starts recognizing a personality.
