Curtis spent 60 hours using 151 different words and phrases connected to the artwork, its creation and its history to rebuild the image entirely from language.

INSIDE THE ARTWORK

This was one of those pieces where the details kept multiplying.

The Great Wave gave me a lot to work with.

22 Humans Are Visible. Three Boats. Eight Rowers Per Boat. Mount Fuji. Claw-Like Crest. Force Of Nature.

Then there are details about the original process, including Prints Were Made Using Ink And Woodblocks and Blocks Carved By A Horishi.

I used 151 different words and phrases and spent 60 hours rebuilding the image through lettering.

That made this one of the more involved pieces I have created.

From a distance, I wanted the famous wave to take over.

Then, once you move closer, all of that hidden history starts surfacing.
