Vegas has never been very interested in subtle.

Some places whisper.

Las Vegas has a vocabulary all its own: Neon. Glitter. Showgirls. Magic Show. High-Roller. Wedding. Casinos. Nightlife. Jackpot! Giant Ferris Wheel.

Curtis put the whole wonderfully excessive vocabulary into one icon.

The Las Vegas Sign is created from 141 different words and phrases tied to the city and the experience of being there.

Adventure. Dazzling. Electric. Extravagant. Fortune. Luck. Romance. Spectacle. The Strip. Viva.

And, of course:

Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas Nevada.

Curtis spent 37 hours drawing the words into the sign.

From across the room, it says Vegas.

Up close, Vegas answers back.

INSIDE THE ARTWORK

I did not have much trouble finding personality for this one.

The Las Vegas Sign gave me 141 different words and phrases, and the list reads a little like walking down The Strip.

Neon. Glitter. Casinos. Comedy Acts. Magic Show. Music. Nightlife. Roulette. Shopping. Showgirls. Wedding. Zipline.

Then there are Adventure, Celebration, Love, Luck, Romance and Unforgettable.

I spent 37 hours drawing all of those pieces into the finished sign.

For a city known for spectacle, I wanted the closer look to have just as much going on as the first one.

There is always one more word to find.

That seemed very Vegas to me.
